Step 1 - Register for a background check    

    The state now requires all new applicants to be fingerprinted and background checked thru Cogent. Visit: https://cogentid.3m.com/nm/index_NM.htm to register. Cost $44

    Step 2 - Complete the Exam Registration Form    
      Step 3 - Complete the License Application    

        Step 4 - Submit Everything to PSI Testing
        Enclose your "Fingerprint Submission Receipt", "Exam Registration Form" and "License Application" to the New Mexico PSI Processing Center:

        Please Note:   First time applicants must include the licensing fee. If appointment forms are enclosed, include the appointment fees of $20 per line of business.

        Once you have received approval, you can schedule to take your exam by contacting PSI or register for an appointment online, by clicking here



        Instructions for completing your background check registration:

        • Under "Applicant Use", Click "Register Online for a Background Check
        • Next to the field “ORI”, click on the "ORI Lookup" button on the right.   
        • A new window will pop up. At the top, in the "Agency Name" field, type the word, "Office". Click the "Search" button.           
        • It should find one line item. Either double click the "NM920210Z", or click it once, then at the bottom of the window click "Select".
        • This should populate the fields, "ORI and Reason" on the application.
        • After completing the rest of the application, submit the form and apply payment of $44. Be sure to print out two copies of the "Fingerprint Submission Receipt".
        • Take the submission receipt and your ID to a fingerprint location. (No appointment necessary) 
        *Results of your background check will automatically be submitted to the processing center.

        Exam Retake Information:

        You must wait one business day before contacting PSI to schedule a new examination. The application is valid for six months. If you fail an exam twice, you will not be allowed to retake it again for 30 days. If you fail your exam an additional two times, you will have to wait an additional six months to schedule and take your exam and will need to submit a new application form, application fees, registration form and registration fees.
